Lake Khövsgöl is Mongolia's largest freshwater lake by volume, holding almost 70% of the country's fresh water and about 0.4% of all the fresh water on Earth (Wikipedia). It lies in the far north near the Russian border, is 136 km long and up to 262 m deep, and is surrounded by larch forest and mountains. Most travellers visit between late June and early September and base themselves in Hatgal or at the lakeshore camps.
Quick answer: Allow at least 5–6 days from Ulaanbaatar if you drive, or 3–4 days if you fly to Mörön. Go between late June and early September for open water and warm days, or in early March for the Ice Festival.

How to get there
There are two options. Fly from Ulaanbaatar to Mörön, the provincial capital, then drive about 100 km to Hatgal. Or drive the whole way, roughly 800 km, usually split over two days with a stop at Amarbayasgalant Monastery or in the Orkhon Valley. Driving is slower but makes the journey part of the trip; see our private driver page.
What to do
- Horse riding along the western shore, from a few hours to multi-day rides.
- Boat trips on the lake in summer.
- Hiking in the hills above the lake, with wide views over the water.
- Swimming, if you are brave: the water stays cold even in summer.
- Meeting herding families, including yak herders around the lake.
- The reindeer herders (Tsaatan, or Dukha) live in the taiga west of the lake. Visiting them is a separate multi-day expedition by vehicle and horse, not a day trip.
When to go
Late June to early September is the season: the lake is open, camps are running and the days are warm, though nights are cool. The lake freezes in winter, and in early March the Khövsgöl Ice Festival brings horse-sledge races, ice sculptures and games on the frozen lake (Blue Pearl Ice Festival). See the best time to visit Mongolia and Mongolia in winter.
Where to stay
Most visitors stay in ger camps and guesthouses along the western shore north of Hatgal, which is easier to reach, or in Hatgal itself. The eastern shore is quieter and more remote. Book early for July and August.
